 Game Scene Final Project Post

The goal of this project was to create a scene from the game Sonic Adventure. Our team chose to work on Windy Valley, aiming to bring this level to life. The reason we chose this for our project is because it felt like something we could manage for the time given to us. While we did focus on some of the main assets in the game, we did add some of our own to give it that extra juice. In this post I will also go over the map layout and how we had originally had it planned out.

To start off the layout we started the player at the first island which had a pavilion and some tree which Vinh made which turned out great. The player would then cross the bridge to the next island where the player would be able to interact with the gravity cannon which I made in the first sprint. This cannon wouldn’t have worked without the help of Tang making the script for it to properly shoot out the player.

My portion of the scene consisted of making the main island which was a total of 6 which were all just duplicated. The next model I made was the actual final set piece which is the final island which I made in maya and then the last model I made was the gravity cannon which as mentioned was completed in first sprint.

When it comes to texturing, I’m kind of bad at choosing the right textures to make it look as good as possible, but I think everything came out okay, but maybe could have been better.

My responsibilities for our end result was organizing unity and also setting up the scene to get it how we wanted. Coordinating the various elements and ensuring they came together seamlessly was a crucial aspect of the project.

I would say organizing the scene with everybody's assets and textures was kind of a hassle but it’s pretty organized now. Setting up the scene and adding all the assets was very satisfying knowing we were almost done, and everything was coming together. One of the tricky things was deciding where I wanted to place the assets because I have never played Sonic, so I was unsure of where to start so I just watched some videos, and it was pretty straightforward of where to place the assets.

Reflecting on the development process, it was a collaborative effort that showcased each team member's strengths. Vinh's attention to detail in his models, Tang's scripting process for the gravity cannon, and my work on the main island all contributed to the overall success of the project. I have to also give props to Andrew and Joseph for all the great assets they provided as well.

As we navigated through the challenges of this project, it became evident that our teamwork and individual contributions brought this project to life. While there's always room for improvement and lessons learned along the way, I am proud of what our team achieved in making a slice of our Sonic Adventure project.

 Sprint 5:

In Sprint 5, my main focus was finishing the textures and UVs for the terrain. Everything I feel turned out pretty well in terms of looks.

Now that everything is getting textured for all of our models, we plan to get everything finished by Sunday, so that way we have a couple of days to just play through our level and do some final tweaks.

Going forward, I’m going to work on texturing the last set piece which will be placed on the final terrain. After doing that, I’m going to gather all the models my team has made and start placing them where they are supposed to be placed on the map.

When it comes to other stuff that needs to be added, I think just audio and post processing is one of the only other things that needs to be done. As of now we are still adjusting the waterfall and water for the fountain.

Looking ahead as the deadline approaches, my goal is to just have good communication with my team to make sure everything is good to go.

 Sprint 4:

In Sprint 4, my main focus was finishing the terrain which will be the final island. Everything I feel turned out pretty well in terms of looks. I don’t plan to take this into Substance Painter, and I actually plan to just paint on the model in Unity so I can get a more realistic look to it.

When it comes to the changes I made for the terrain, I added some more hills and small peaks on the edges.

One other thing I did add which wasn’t a card was adding skybox to the level which would make it seem like the player was in the clouds.

Going forward into the next sprint, I’m going to work on texturing the island to sort of match the other island I made. After doing that I plan to start on the model of sonic which will be serving as the center piece at the end of the scene.

With this last sprint, I am going to start having all the models my group have made so far and start feeling up the scene to have everything come together.

 Sprint 3:

In Sprint 3, I have been modeling the final island in which the player will see. When it came to modeling this island, I have been trying to learn the sculpting tool in maya which is not as good as Zbrush but it works.

My primary focus was on modeling the final floating island. This task, while not yet completed, allowed me to explore the sculpting tool in Maya. The process involved creating a unique environment that would be a key element of our project.

I extensively utilized Maya's sculpting tool during this sprint. The sculpting tool in Maya is a powerful feature for shaping organic and natural forms. It enabled me to add intricate details and create a visually decent looking terrain. However, it would have been nice to use Zbrush but I didn’t have any free time to go into the lab to use it. I am glad that the sculpting tool was a thing though.

Going into sprint 4, I’m going to finish this island and add all the final textures onto it. Following that I will work on one of my last few cards which will be the giant stone statue of sonic. Also, next sprint is when I will start putting things together so hopefully, I'll have that ready by next the end of next sprint.

 Sprint 2:

In sprint 2, I’ve been creating some of the main models for our game. So I’ll go ahead and walk through some of the models I have been working on.

First up, I started by sculpting a floating island in Maya which is going to be one of the main pieces the player is going to be walking on. This island will be floating in the sky, creating a sense of wonder and adventure for the players. I tried to keep the design as straightforward as possible, but I still wanted to add some detail to it.

Next, I created what is supposed to be the Master Emerald which is supposed to be one of the pieces that will hopefully catch the players eye in game. The use of textures and colors will hopefully help achieve that affect.

In order to make the Master Emerald stand out, I made what is going to be one of the center pieces at the end of the game. This structure will be functional so the player will be able to walk up the stairs and they will also be able to view the emerald at the very top.

Something else I wanted to finish was texturing the gravity cannon which I modeled last sprint. The aim of the textures was to make the cannon more visually appealing as the player is being shot out of it.

One of things, I’m going to be working on in the upcoming sprint is a giant stone statue of sonic which is going to be the main set piece.

In Sprint 2, I have tried to create some of the main pieces of the world. As my team and I continue to make all these assets, I’m excited to see how everything comes together.
