Playtest 1 Unit 3

List of Games I play tested:

Group 2 : Unnamed

Group 5: Unnamed

Group 6: Box Office

Group 8: You are the King

Out of these games I enjoyed Group 8's game "You are the King"

Formal Elements List:

Players:

In this game there will be a number of 2 players who battle it out with different cards each round. The player's role is to place down a king, spy, or citizen card and whichever card your opponent places down determines whether or not you win or lose the round.

The player interaction pattern is player vs player.

Objectives:

According to Chapter 3: Working with Formal elements the objective in this game is to “Capture”. The reason I say this is because the point of the game is to destroy your opponent's king and I feel this playtest demonstrates it well.

I would say another example of this could be “Rescue or escape”. The reason I say this is because your job is to get your opponent's king or escape his spy to avoid being attacked and captured.

Procedures:

What exactly does the player do?
The two players each get their own set of cards that consist of one king, one spy and three citizens. The procedure occurs each round when the player is required to place one of the cards down and they either win or lose the round depending on what they placed down.

How is the game put into play:

The players are given a total of 5 cards to use.

Progression of Action:

The game goes into a core loop of placing cards to attack each other

There are no special actions in this game.

Finally resolving actions:

Once you lose your spy you pretty much lose the game or once you lose all your citizens you lose the game because to kill a king you need a spy and to kill a spy you need citizens. So it pretty much goes in a circle and there will be an example of that.

Rules:

In this game the rules are very simple, the player is only allowed to place one card per round. Between rounds both players are able to communicate with each other for one minute before they have to place a card down. I feel the purpose of this is to try to throw off your opponent and trick them into thinking you're playing a certain card.

Resources:

In this game the resources provided are a king, spy, and three citizen cards.

The king has only one life so if your king gets taken out you lose the game and your opponent wins the game. When it comes to actions each player will place down one of their cards at the same time and that determines what happens next. There is no time limit, it's just until the king is destroyed.

When it comes to player lives, once you lose a card it's gone until the game is over and the king is defeated.

Conflict:

In this game the main conflict is maintaining your cards and trying to keep your king alive. This is a good example of Dilemma because you need to be smart with which cards you want to play because one wrong move can cost you the game.

Boundaries:

There are no boundaries in this game, at least not that I know of. It's a very simple setup which requires very little time to win the game so there are no boundaries.

Outcome:

The outcome of the game is whenever the player’s king is destroyed the game is over.

The only way to kill the king is if it's the spy against the king.
