Group 7

Card Game Modifications and Rule Sheet

For this assignment I worked with my group 7 partner to modify some of the rules of Solitaire and create our own rule sheet. Our version of Solitaire plays differently than the original solitaire format. Rather than there being seven piles there will be five rows known as the Tableau. For the first row, you would lay one card face up for each stack. Going on it will change, for example in the picture below the second row will have four cards in total two up and two down. Next the third row will have 3 rows faced down and so fourth until you reach the fifth row of cards.

Here is an example of the layout.

Just to discuss again, the above image has a total of five rows, the first row being the bottom containing the ten of hearts, ace of spades and four of spades. Which will have the first cards revealed and so on.

For our whole process we both agreed that in our future group assignments we were going to work a lot earlier than waiting till the last few days to work on it. This did give us a hard time because my partner David had some knowledge about solitaire, I did not have any prior knowledge about the game. So he was able to help me out by explaining the rules of the game and how it's set up.

This is the original set up of Solitaire.

After looking over some of the old rules David came up with the idea of a ladder system and that is how we came up with that idea.

After thinking of ideas we came up with this one. One of our first ideas was being able to use the same suit and color. So for example if there was a black four of hearts you would be able to place a black 3 of hearts below it, but that didn’t seem like a big change for us and wanted it to be different and didn’t want to stick with this idea. Below is an example.

(Both are the same color and suit)

T One of our bigger issues was definitely time management. We started our rule 1v.2 sheet this past Saturday and we could have really improved our work. We have given ourselves some time to playtest and make sure this works properly but if we didn’t procrastinate we could have added more details or even a new idea that no one has thought of. Who knows, maybe we will think of something interesting down the line of the class. I liked the idea David has thought of though because I have never heard or seen something like it.

I do feel like this was a successful modified version of solitaire that was unique, but I feel like some things could have been changed if we gave ourselves more time to think. Just like what was mentioned in our textbook. We take one step at a time to see if it works and add on and go from there. I think we added one to many rules at once but hey it works. In the future we will be more careful on how we attack.

For our second draft we didn’t know what we wanted to change because it was rather difficult to think of ideas for this instead of making it a simple concept.

I feel if I had a prior knowledge of the game this should have gone a lot smoother than it went. Going towards our development process, it would have been better if I knew the rules because trying to change the rules without knowing much about them made it a tough process, but it’s finished.
